Passive RFID reader Wi-Fi is a battery operated device that works in the presence of active RFID enabled readers or tags. In most cases a passive RFID reader Wi-Fi is used to receive the signals from active RFID tags in order to authenticate or locate them to prevent the objects from theft.

Unlike active RFID readers that are capable of sending interrogator signals to the active or passive RFID tags and are also capable of receiving the replies from them, passive RFID reader Wi-Fi is only capable of receiving the signals from active RFID tags. Since such passive RFID reader Wi-Fi devices are not as costly as the active RFID readers, the passive RFID reader Wi-Fi devices are commonly used in larger shopping malls to reduce the expenses.
